Early Solid Silver 'Fuga in Egitto' Religious Plaque (Flight to Egypt) 

This lovely, vintage, heavy, Italian sterling silver plaque or panel titled 'Fuga in Egitto' (Flight to Egypt) is cast in relief and depicts Mary with baby Jesus in her arms, on horseback, being led by Joseph on foot. A scene taken from one of the panels on the twelfth century bronze doors of the 'Basilica of San Zeno' in Verona, Italy. It is impressed on the one side with the words 'FUGA IN EGITTO' and on the other 'DAL PORTALE DI S. ZENO - VERONA' along with the Italian silver hallmark and 925. The panel is in excellent condition and measures 55mm x 52mm x 5mm and weighs a heavy 76,8g. 

NOTE: 'Flight into Egypt' is a biblical event where the three of them fled to Egypt, travelling through a barren landscape to escape the wrath of King Herod, who was seeking to kill baby Jesus. The scene is meant to symbolize the Holy Familys flight from danger and their trust in God to provide for them during their journey.
