Commonly known as: String of Dolphins
Botanical name: Senecio peregrinus
The String of Dolphins is a rare and fascinating trailing succulent, loved for its playful dolphin-shaped leaves. Each leaf curves like a tiny leaping dolphin, making this plant a conversation piece in any collection. Perfect for hanging baskets, trailing shelves, or sunny windows, it combines quirky looks with fairly easy care.
Light:
String of Dolphins thrives in bright, indirect light. It can handle some direct sun, especially in the morning, but harsh afternoon rays may scorch the leaves. Indoors, a bright north- or east-facing window is ideal.
💧 Watering:
Like most succulents, this plant prefers the "soak and dry" method. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot. In winter, reduce watering further.
🌡 Temperature & Humidity:
Best in warm conditions between 1826°C. Protect from frost and cold drafts, as this plant is not cold-hardy. Normal household humidity is sufficient.
🪴 Soil & Repotting:
Use a free-draining mix to prevent soggy roots. Our Aroid Mix combined with extra Perlite works well for succulents. Adding Bark Chips keeps the soil light and airy. Repot only when the plant has outgrown its pot, as it prefers being slightly root-bound.
🍃 Fertiliser:
Feed lightly during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a balanced fertiliser such as our Controlled Release Fertiliser or boost with an Organic Fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, which can cause the leaves to lose their dolphin shape.
🐛 Pests:
Occasionally attracts aphids or mealybugs. Wipe down the leaves and treat with insecticidal spray if needed.
With its playful leaf shape and trailing habit, the String of Dolphins is perfect for anyone wanting a plant that's both low-maintenance and full of character.
