This magnificent prestige publication in three volumes is the first definitive work on South African trees ever to be published. It is the only publication to contain a comprehensive description of every one of the more then 1 000 species of indigenous trees to be found in southern Africa.

The ambitious field study and research program was undertaken under the aegis of Dr L.E.W. Codd. Director of the Botanical Research Institute, Pretoria: and was completed with the co-operation of the Institutess staff. The classifications used, the nomenclature, key illustrations, and the general approach is scientific. Apart from the detailed botanical data, Eve Palmer has incorporated in the new work a vast store of historical , geographical, medicinal, nutritional, agricultural and even palaeontological data, presented in the same lucid and attractive style that won for her so large an audience in the earlier book. The work will thus appeal to a broad group of readers, to farmers, to foresters and to tree enthusiasts generally.

The illustrations are a special feature of the work, there are an abundance of field photographs of trees in their natural environment, and close-up studies of bark and trunks, and there are numerous detail drawings of leaves, fruits, branches etc.

Norah Pitmans drawings are meticulous, accurate and beautiful. They supplement the textual descriptions and contribute to the positive identification of trees by leaves, fruits and detail characteristics. A number of drawings by Mrs Rhona Collett, formerly artist at the Botanical Research Institute, have been included a notable addition.
