Ben Mathews and Itshe Ndlovu — one white the other Zulu, grew up together and shared a bond as close as any brothers. With the outbreak of the Zulu rebellion they found themselves as reluctant participants — on opposing sides. The rebellion of 1906 was a sequel to the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 when Zululand was plunged into civil war; the Zulu nation lost their king and most of their land. In this climate of simmering discontent the colony needed only a spark to set it ablaze. The imposition of the poll tax in 1905 provided that spark and the colony exploded into civil rebellion — the Natal Rebellion of 1906. With the same valour and abandon exhibited by their elders 27 years earlier, the Zulu warriors flung themselves at the vastly improved rifles, the maxims and field guns of the Natal government forces. And once more they were defeated, but this time the British army wasn't involved.
