William Kentridge's "The Deluge" is a powerful charcoal and pastel drawing from his early period. This work is part of his renowned series, Nine Drawings for Projection (1989-1991), which explores themes of social upheaval, human struggle, and resilience.

"The Deluge" depicts a chaotic, dreamlike scene with torrential rain and flooding. The drawing symbolizes the turmoil and disintegration of societal structures during the apartheid era in South Africa, while also conveying Kentridge's signature blend of realism and surrealism. Kentridge's expressive charcoal lines and smudges, combined with pastel accents for color and texture, create a dynamic and emotive visual language. His characteristic palimpsest technique, layering and erasing images, adds depth and complexity to the work

William Kentridge's Nine Drawings for Projection (1989-1991) is a seminal series of charcoal drawings that explore themes of apartheid, colonialism, and personal identity. These large-scale works on paper, were photographed in sequence to create animated films. Using his signature palimpsest technique, Kentridge layered and erased images, creating dreamlike narratives. The series includes iconic works like "Johannesburg, 2nd Greatest City After Paris" and "The Deluge", offering powerful commentary on South Africa's turbulent past and the human condition.

As Kentridge states, "the drawings are not just images, but also records of the process of thinking, of the activity of drawing." This collection offers a unique glimpse into the artist's contemplation on the human condition.

William Kentridge is a South African artist known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. He was born in Johannesburg in 1955 and studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Johannesburg Art Foundation. Kentridge's work often explores the political and social issues of his native South Africa, as well as broader themes of time, memory, and history. He is considered one of the most important contemporary artists working today.
