William Kentridge's "History of the Main Complaint" (1996) is a seminal series of 30 charcoal drawings that explore themes of apartheid, colonialism, and personal identity. These large-scale works on paper showcase Kentridge's signature expressive and gestural marks, layering and erasure techniques, and fragmented, dreamlike narratives. The series investigates the complexities of South African history, the relationship between individual memory and collective history, and the tension between reality and fiction.
Characterized by their emotive power and intellectual depth, notable drawings from this series include "Walking Man", "Self-Portrait as a Coffee Pot", and the titular "History of the Main Complaint". Kentridge also created an animated film based on this series, further solidifying his position as a leading contemporary artist.
As Kentridge states, "the drawings are not just images, but also records of the process of thinking, of the activity of drawing." This collection offers a unique glimpse into the artist's contemplation on the human condition.
