Small Square -14cm Plate Or Art Deco Bread and butter plate ,Burleigh Ware B & L Established 1851 circa.1930

A stylish Ivory Art Deco plate,  Made by Burleigh Ware B & L in England

The transfer on the piece was hand-painted over, with inner rings of greens and orange and yellow floral detail on the right topside corner.

This ivory, pre-war,  bread and butter plate have a  black border with a green undertone. The ivory or off-white appearance was due to the bone ash within this hard-paste porcelain. This plate also comes with a standard printed mark of the 1930s.

CONDITION:

Pre💗/Utilized

This plate is glazed on both sides and in good vintage condition, not pristine, but in a very presentable state, particularly for an item that is at least 90+ years old.  It is square and curved-edged.  This small plate measures 14 cm in diameter.  This plate aged beautifully with crackling or fine crazing on both sides of the plate and,  you could find it on virtually all glazed art pottery of this age. (picture 5)   It is not detectable with fingernails and cannot be seen from a few feet away.  This piece also has two glaze scale chips on the reverse of the plate.  It is a rare design, and the limited number means that its "authentic rarity" equals value.  The crazing and crackling should not affect the value of this rare vintage "almost" antique piece, otherwise in good condition.

ADDITIONAL INFO

MANUFACTURER:

Burleigh Ware  Estd 1851, B & L Ltd

BURLEIGH WARE ESTd 1851

Burleigh was established in 1851 as Hulme & Booth in Burslem, Staffordshire, named after the founders, and then renamed Burgess & Leigh, after names of their owners.  In their golden years, the firm primarily produced toilet ware but expanded its tableware ranges in the 1920s and 1930s.   Most patterns were made and designed by art director Harold Bennett and other designers like Charles Wilkes, Ernest Baily, and Charlotte Rhead from 1926 to 1931. Their range of jugs,  with sculptural handles in animals, birds, and figures, is as popular with collectors today as they were with the 1930s public.

The trade name "BURLEIGH WARE" was introduced in the 1930s according to a Pottery Gazette - August 1937.

" Manufacturers of Semi-Porcelain, Ivory White & Honey Glaze Specialties, Print & Enamel Pastel Bands, Derbys in Dinner Tea and Fruit, Burcraft Salad Ware  Etc.

MADE IN ENGLAND:

'Made in England' denotes a 20th-century date.

In 1921, the amendment to the Act required the phrase "Made in" preceding the country of origin.  The labeling at individual British potteries varies somewhat from the 1891/1921 dating requirements described above (e.g., Wedgwood adopted the "Made in England" around 1908/10 and may have used it on some pieces as early as 1898

A BEEHIVE SURROUNDED BY LEAVES PRINTED IN GREEN:

The plate comes with a standard printed mark of the 1930s.

It identifies the pre-war back stamp  Burgess & Leigh continued to use the beehive mark as from the 1940 s the beehive was much smaller, with no foliage or leaves.
