VINTAGE 1980S WOODEN BATONGA RHODESIA CLUB WITH HAND FORGED IRON AXE
THIS IS A VINTAGE WOODEN CLUB AXE USED BY THE BATONGA PEOPLE OF ZAMBEZI VALLEY IN RHODESIA AND ZAMBIA. IT WAS BOUGHT BY ME ON HOLIDAY NEAR KARIBA IN ZIMBABWE IN 1988 AND HAS BEEN IN MY POSESSION FOR 35 YEARS. THE CLUB IS CARVED FROM EITHER THE MOPANI TREE OR IS MADE FROM A MANGROVE ROOT. THE IRON AXE HEAD IS HAND FORGED IRON.
SIMILAR TO ZULU AND XHOSA CLUBS IT HAS A SIMPLE FABRICATION USING A HEAVY WOODEN CLUB WITH A BULGE AT THE TOP THROUGH WHICH IS MOUNTED A SIMPLE HAND FORGED IRON AXE HEAD.
The BaTonga people of Zimbabwe were settled in and around the Binga District, Kariba Valley area, and some parts of Matabeleland. Tonga people are also in southern Zambia and to a lesser extent, in Mozambique. The Tonga are known to be a peacefull people and these clubs were used to cut wood and to protect livestock and themselves etc. Of course it makes for a handy war axe as well.
THIS CLUB AXE WILL MAKE A NICE DECORATIVE DISPLAY ITEM BUT CAN ALSO BE USED TO FIGHT ANOTHER WAR OR TWO IF SO INCLINED.

CONDITION: SOME SURFACE RUST TO AXE. SMALL SPLITS IN WOODEN SHAFT AT BACK BUT STILL STRONG AND IN TACT. WOODEN CLUB IS WORN AND HAS USED WEAR SHOWING ITS AGE.
