The Odyssey by  Homer

Published by The Folio Society, 1974, with slipcase, hardcover, illlustrated, buckram cloth covering, 284 pages,  condition: as new.

The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is one of the oldest surviving works of literature and remains popular with modern audiences. Like the Iliad, the Odyssey is divided into 24 books. It follows the Greek hero and king of Ithaca, Odysseus, and his homecoming journey after the ten-year long Trojan War. His journey from Troy to Ithaca lasts an additional ten years, during which time he encounters many perils and all of his crewmates are killed. In Odysseus' long absence, he is presumed dead, leaving his wife Penelope and son Telemachus to contend with a group of unruly suitors competing for Penelope's hand in marriage.

Great books should be outstanding not only in literary content but also in their physical form: this has always been the philosophy of the publishers, The Folio Society (FS). FS books as tactile and aesthetic objects has been a constant hallmark. FS beleives reading is enhanced by the book itself, in which typography, illustration, paper, printing and binding all play a part in creating a harmonious whole. In a world of declining publishing standards, where most books are cheaply printed, and bound using low-grade materials, The Folio Society resolutely sets store by traditional values of excellence. From introducers who make up the great names of modern literature and academia, and editors and picture researchers who ensure unrivalled standards of research and textual work, to  artists who have swept the board in so many illustrations awards FSo offers a complete experience for the book-lover. The FS sets the bar for exceptional literary merit. Designed for longevity, delight and to build the world's best collectors' libraries, Folio editions are, above all, crafted for the ultimate reading experience.
