Die verhaal speel hom af in die nou straatjies van die sewentiende-eeuse Amsterdam, waar die weeshuisseun Jan Floris deur bemiddeling van die burgemeester in Simonis de Vleet se huis opgeneem word. Meester Simonis is 'n hooggeleerde man en kunshandelaar, en in die oë van die naïewe Jan ook 'n towenaar. Kort voor lank word hy, wat eers matroos wou word, die towenaar se leerjonge. Uit die Duits vertaal deur Dorothea Krige.
Eerste uitgawe in 1968, uitgegee deur Tafelberg-Uitgewers, Kaapstad.
